Boys and Girls Club Launch Media Literacy Workshop
Auto Dealer Supports Bay Area Media Literacy Program
SAN JOSE, Calif., June21, 2006 –Twelve kids from The Boys and Girls Club Smythe House will take part in a Bay Area media literacy program, “Keep it Moving.” This unique program was created by local music producers Fabian Leo, and InfiNate, to offer kids a unique interactive opportunity with media literacy.
“With many after school programs being cut throughout the state, this program gives an alternative to keeping kids off the street,” says InfiNate.
The youth involved will have the opportunity to take part production of a radio commercial. Participants will write their own commercial idea and the winner will have their commercial recorded and broadcast on Bay Area radio station, 106.1 KMEL. Additionally, the kids will get the opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at the KMEL and Channel 7 ABC studios. The kids will have the opportunity to speak on the air with KMEL morning show host, Chuy Gomez about what they learned about media through the implementation of their commercial. Merl Saunders Jr., Executive Director of the San Francisco Recording Academy, better known as The Grammy’s, will also be presenting certificates of achievement during the morning show interview.
“By including popular entertainment icons in after school programs, we are putting an American Idol touch on education,” claims Fabian Leo. “This transfer of excitement will emphasize the importance behind education for these young minds.”
Capitol Scion who sponsored the workshop will be offering a free public concert from Bay Area hip-hop star Turf Talk, and up-and -coming artists D. Labrie and Meko Makafi on July14 from 5 – 8pm. A custom feature showcase will also be present with more than 100 Scions on display.
