ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
In the era when beef and braggadocio run rampant in rap music, wouldn’t it be uplifting for a young buck to blow a fresh breath of smoked-filled air into the game? Wouldn’t you like to see this new jack come to the forefront and talk about the everyday grind, harsh realities of life, and spit street stories harder than the asphalt he is standing on? With almost 25 years of experiences and tales to tell, that individual may very well be on the verge of something special.
Enter the one and only: Tony Ganja......
Birthed Antonio Gonzalez, this man sweats the New York state of mind in every action he makes. Growing up in Westchester County, New York, he has played the similar role as many New York teens for years; hanging in the streets, hustling, and doing anything but bettering his life. With all of his past abandonment issues with his father, introvert personality, as well as his always aggravating on-and-off occupational luck, the only positive aspect in his life was music. Tony himself will tell you that, “Music is all I can see myself doing; other than the block, music is my heart and soul, and I know that if I can find a way to give my blood, sweat, and tears, I can change my life and make my family dreams come true”.
This half Dominican/half Puerto Rican lyricist was first influenced by the Hip Hop culture in the late 1980’s. Listening to such artists as: Mello Man-Ace, Method Man, Wu-Tang Clan, The Notorious BIG, 2Pac Shakur, and Big Pun, Tony Ganja is no stranger to the raw, gritty, and honest perspectives of the street. Rather a fan, and not originally wanting to be a rapper, he was put onto his passion by neighborhood friends that did rap. As Tony grew accustomed to writing lyrics and battling, he felt that it was a way for people that don’t have a voice to positively vent and speak on issues that need to be addressed. With no formal teachings of how to construct his rhymes, he just wrote about what was around him, his experiences, and what he wanted to get. Speaking on Tony’s skills, DJ Suss. One of the Ransom Reps, has said “Tony Ganja does it how a real emcee is supposed to do it…take notes, shuddup, and listen!”
In early summer of 2001, needing an environment and life change, Tony defected all the way down to Pompano Beach, Florida. Through family, he linked up with his cousin, producer/artist/promoter Doc J who was on the verge of starting his own entertainment company. Seeing his untapped talent, Doc J had taken Tony Ganja under his wing, teaching him more about hip hop, and force-feeding him the ways of the music industry. Unfortunately, two years later Tony’s situation worsened and he had to return back to New York. Back in his New York home, he did take his new lessons and started recording music right away.
Months passed, but the hard-working duo kept in contact. By now, Doc J had made enough power moves to officially establish and sustain a strong company called Hear My Voice Entertainment, Inc. and intended to make Tony Ganja one of its premiere artists. In March 2003, Tony finished his debut mixtape entitled “ANALYZE THIS: MIXTAPE” and got Connecticut’s own DJ Suss. One to host it. Under the watchful eye of Doc J, it was manufactured, packaged, promoted, and released in both New York and south Florida markets. Doing relatively well in both demographics, for the short run they had pressed, it was a learning experience for Tony in understanding how much more work and budget needs to go into mixtapes. On the other hand, the quick buzz opened many doors for him to many new connections.
Since engaging into music business, Tony Ganja has come across various people that have worked with him and given him guidance. Continuing his friendship with DJ Suss. One, Tony actually helped him in promoting and doing shows with his Ransom Reps crew. Carrying on his partnership with Doc J, Tony has done shows as far south as Boca Raton, FL, and even accompanied Doc J to the 2nd annual Indie Music Conference in Tampa, FL. For new music, Tony has collaborated with some fellow up-and-coming artists such as, Finale!, Ray Young, Rudy G, DJ Illmatic, Preme, and many more. Tony even had some meetings with and received insight from established producer Ron “Amen Ra” Lawrence of Bad Boy Entertainment. In the recording of some new material, Tony has made a good alliance with engineer/producer/artist Mirk of FCM Productions.
With tomorrow in sight, Tony Ganja will not stop his learning, as well as his writing of new music. He has planned both a new individual mixtape, as well as a possible collaboration project with Ray Young, entitled “The Double Jeopardy Mixtape”. As always, Tony is very open to new collaborations with other artists and djs, so holler at him ASAP. He will definitely be deeply involved in the other new mixtape releases from Hear My Voice Entertainment, as well as their upcoming business expansions into radio, fashion design, and distribution. What the future holds for Tony Ganja is uncertain, but with the right amount of hard work it could be bright. Doc J explains it best, “Tony lays it down! Other than being my cousin, Tony can be a gifted emcee when put with the right people. He’s lived both in the north (NY) and south (FL), so he’s seen different ways of life, and he’s been through a lot of experiences. Given the right opportunity and situation, he has a lot of quality things that he can put on record. He’s definitely one of the highlight artists at Hear My Voice Entertainment”.
