1- If you had to choose one J. Dilla song that helped inspire you and your sound, what would it be?

Even though i don't like answering these type of questions about Dilla, I'll have to say one track that inspired me a lot out of so many would have to be "Dont Nobdy Care About Us" by Phat Kat..it was on a 12" they put out around 2000, and the beat sound like nothing i ever heard at the time. My mind was blown, just hearing his crazy drum programming on that song was nutz, and the sample sounded like some shit you would only hear in your head because it was just that dope. So that track just made me look at beats different and think about different ways i could approach a loop before i even chop it. Dilla beats did that for a lot of people, he just kept re-inventing the sound of hip hop beats almost every few months, which was crazy, so that showed me how to just stay creative and never follow any trends that might be out there musically, just do me and try to inspire of people to do the same.

2- Future collaborations with any MC's, DJ's, or producers you hope to work with?

I'll work with almost anybody that wants to work with me, but i do have a few people i would like to collab with in the future, like Ghostface, MF Doom, would luv to do a crazy ass record for Busta or Luda just off of the way they style over beats...but yet, i have a number of people on my hit list, hopefully i make enough noise to have those same artist checking for me.

3- Choose 3 single words to sum up Popular Demand.

07's.

BEST.

ALBUM.

1. Tell us about the music scene in Detroit. The music scene in Detroit is diverse, we have our different groups of people that’s down with the big techno movement, the soul movement, and other genres, but the underground hip hop scene here in Detroit is not as big as most people would think.Don’t get me wrong-- we have our own space in the D too, and people that’s behind the underground hip hop artist out of the D, but it seems like the scene here would be much bigger because of artists that rep the city like Slum Village, Phat Kat, Guilty Simpson, J Dilla and more. It seems that the music gets more appreciated outside of Detroit, but u can still catch a couple of spots where the music is appreciated for the home team.

2. Who and/or what influences your music? I listen to all types of music in all genres so my inspiration comes from a lot of different places, so its not just one specific style of music I can think of, but some of my favorite artists to listen to when I’m looking for inspiration are artists like Prince, J. Dilla, Curtis Mayfield, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, D'Angelo, James Brown, Willie Hutch, and the list can go on an on from there.

3. Where did you get the name Black Milk? When I started rhyming and getting into music, I knew I wanted a name that would stand out and grab people’s attention when they heard it or seen it. I was sitting there writing different words down on paper until Black Milk came together and it was as simple as that, nothing too deep. It’s a ‘love it or hate it’ type of name but when people hear the music, the name doesn’t even matter any more. Plus, I think its kind of a Detroit thing to have a unique, different, crazy type of name like Eminem, Slum Village, Phat Kat and Black Milk. They’re not east coast or west coast hip hop kind of names.
